Married taxpayers have the option of filing a separate Personal Income Tax return. This option can be made by one of the spouses and is binding on the other.
When and How to File a Return
• If one of the spouses wishes to file a separate tax return, they must notify it through the relevant electronic service.
• This option can be notified or revoked by February 28 of each year.
What Happens to Those Who Have Already Elected a Separate Return
• If a separate return was elected the previous year and the marital relationship is still in effect, a new notification is not required.
• If someone wishes to return to a joint return, they must first revoke the previous election.
Filing a separate return can affect various tax data, such as tax refunds, tax exemptions and spousal obligations. If you are not sure which option is best for you, contact your accountant for personalized guidance.
