🔥 Extension for land clearing – What you need to know

, by Κωνσταντίνα Χριστοδούλου, 2 min reading time

The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has granted an extension until June 15, 2025 for the declaration of cleaning of plots and uncovered areas.

✅ Who is obliged to clean?

Those who are owners, tenants or have any right to:

  • Plots within a city plan or settlements

  • Lands near residential areas (up to 100 meters from the boundaries)

  • Lands with a building outside the plan (under certain conditions)

They must clean their plots from April 1st to 30th of each year and keep them clean until October 31st, during the fire season.

Excludes already landscaped and maintained gardens.

🧹 What does cleaning include?

  • Cutting and removal of dry or broken trees and branches

  • Removal of dry grass and flammable matter

  • Pruning the base of trees

  • Thinning of low vegetation

  • Removal of garbage and hazardous materials

  • Safe disposal of all residues

🏛️ The role of the Municipality

Municipalities carry out checks, autopsies and sample inspections to determine whether cleaning obligations have been met.

⚠️ What happens if I don't clean my plot?

  • Fine of €0.50 per sq m. (minimum €200)

  • Charging of cleaning by the Municipality, if done ex officio

  • Fine of €1,000 for failure to submit a declaration

  • Prison sentence and fine for false declaration in the Registry

The citizen may appeal within 10 days from the imposition of a fine.

📌 Conclusion: If you have a plot of land or an uncovered space, make sure to clean it up and declare it on time. In addition to avoiding fines, you help prevent fires and protect your neighborhood.
